History of Toro, El

El Toro, in the Alto Palancia, had an Iberian settlement, lived under the lordship of Jérica and from 1550 belonged to the Hieronymite monks of San Miguel de los Reyes until the confiscations of 1837.

Iberians and Romans

On the Peña de las Majadas there is an Iberian settlement (250 BC) with Bronze Age remains. Some paved tracks might be Roman roads, and in 1995 roof tiles and bricks appeared in the Hoya de Santo Domingo that could belong to a rural villa from between the 2nd and 4th centuries.

Middle Ages

Between 1228 and 1232 there were Aragonese raids in the area. On 18 June 1257, according to Francisco Aguilar, Teruel gave up its rights over El Toro, Pina and Barracas, which became subordinate to Jérica. On 28 November 1260 James I granted privileges to the Christian and Moorish population of El Toro and its farmsteads, and on 20 February 1403 Martin I confirmed them with full jurisdiction and exemption from market and toll taxes.

Lordships and the Hieronymites

Alfonso V gave the fief to his brother John on 30 January 1417, and in 1432 it was acquired by Francisco Zarzuela, treasurer of Aragon. In 1518 Zarzuela's heirs sold their rights to the Count of Aranda. On 26 October 1550 the duke died childless and left the lordship to the Hieronymite monks of the monastery of San Miguel de los Reyes, who ran it until the confiscations of 1837.

19th and 20th centuries

On 30 August 1885 the town council reported a cholera epidemic, and in 1912 phylloxera hit the vineyards. During the Civil War the Republican army spread across the area, with shelters, an airfield and powder stores.
