History of Sant Jordi

Sant Jordi, in the Baix Maestrat, grew from a farmstead, the Mas dels Estellers, and became independent of Traiguera in the 17th century.

Origin and independence

It began as the Mas dels Estellers farmstead, bought on 2 August 1261 by the brothers Esteller and Domingo de Monte-Real; until then it was part of Traiguera. From 1319 it was under the lordship of the Order of Montesa. In 1626 residents asked to separate from Traiguera at the Cortes of Monzón, without success. In 1647 and 1649 Philip IV granted a Royal Privilege and a Royal Charter, renaming it Sant Jordi and making it a town of the Maestrazgo, and in May 1655 independence was consolidated, though lawsuits went on.

18th-21st centuries

In the mid-17th century it had about fifty families and Cavanilles put the 1794 population at 150 households. There was strong growth in the 19th century, peaking at 1,676 inhabitants late in the century. The population fell to 605 in 1984 and has grown again since 1998.
