Benassal is the village of water: its spring has been marketed since the 19th century. Its history is shaped by the resettlement under Blasco de Alagón, the lordship of the Templars and Montesa, and a bombing in the Civil War.
Conquest and lordships
In 1234 Blasco de Alagón took Culla castle, on which Benassal depended, and on 3 January 1239 he granted the founding charter. It passed to his daughter Constanza and to Guillem d'Anglesola; in 1303 his son sold the lands to the Templars and, after the order was dissolved, it passed to Montesa.
The water
The therapeutic value of the spring was known from early modern times. It has been sold as a drink since the 19th century, in 1915 bottling for pharmacies began and in 1928 it was declared mineral-medicinal and of public utility.
Civil War
In May 1938 the Condor Legion bombed the town with Stukas; 38 people died, 15 of them from Benassal.
