History of Zucaina

Zucaina, in the Alto Mijares, is a village of Arab origin with Iberian remains from the 6th and 5th centuries BC, whose history is tied to the Moriscos and their expulsion in 1609.

Iberians and Arab origin

The municipality has remains of Iberian settlements, with Iberian pottery from the 6th and 5th centuries BC found at La Escudilla and Los Cabañiles. The village is of Arab origin, and its name may come from sukaina, "little house by the spring".

The Moriscos and depopulation

The history of Zucaina is tied to that of the Moriscos, and it is a good example of an Arab mountain village. After their expulsion in 1609 the municipality was depopulated and recovered slowly, while the interior was also losing people because of the agrarian crisis.
