History of Zorita del Maestrazgo

Zorita del Maestrazgo, in Els Ports, was one of the hamlets of Morella. It was settled in the 13th century and the jurors of Morella bought it in 1367.

A hamlet of Morella

Zorita was one of the so-called hamlets of Morella, within its general territory. According to Escolano and Blasco de Alagón, it was donated for settlement to Andreu de Peralta in 1233; according to other sources, James I did so on 31 March 1253. In the 14th century it was a lordship of the Fernández de Heredia family, and on 20 December 1367 Juan Fernández de Heredia sold it to the jurors of Morella for 14,511 sueldos. From then on it was a lordship of that town.

20th century

With the reform of municipal names in 1916, the municipality, which had been called Zorita, became Zorita del Maestrazgo. The Civil War hit the area and its neighbours hard: trenches and ammunition can still be found in the hills.
