History of Xert

Xert, in the Baix Maestrat, preserves a Bronze Age settlement at La Mola Murada and a medieval centre with the Old Church.

Antiquity and conquest

At La Mola Murada there are remains of a Bronze Age settlement. The Christian reconquest was in 1233, when the castle passed into Christian hands, and a founding charter followed in 1235. It was then a lordship of the Templars and, from 1319, of Montesa.

Early modern period

The Old Church is of 13th-century origin and was renovated in the 17th. The Els Porxes gate dates from 1609.

19th and 20th centuries

In 1836 there was fighting nearby during the Carlist wars, and in the 19th century lordships ended, ending dependence on Montesa. The abbey of the San Marcos hermitage served as a school until the mid-20th century.
