Vistabella del Maestrat, in the Alt Maestrat, was part of the Setena de Culla and the Order of Montesa. During the Peninsular War it was the headquarters of «El Fraile», the guerrilla Asensio Nebot.
Middle Ages
In 1251, after the Christian conquest, Guillem de Anglesola and Constanza de Alagón gave the village to Berenguer de Anglesola and others to settle it. In 1260 Blasco de Alagón «the Grandson» invaded the lordship of Culla and took Culla, Villafranca and Vistabella, which after 1264 returned to the Setena de Culla. In 1338 it was the residence of the King of Aragon, who sent an embassy to the Pope from there. In 1382 Umberto de Thous, master of Montesa, confirmed the founding charter to Pascual Sobirats and others, and the town passed to Montesa.
Wars
In the Peninsular War it served as headquarters of the guerrilla Asensio Nebot, «El Fraile», and in 1812 a battle was fought against General Suchet. In 1835, in the Carlist wars, there was another battle against government troops.
20th and 21st centuries
In 1916 the name changed from «Vistabella» to «Vistabella del Maestrazgo». In 2023 the municipality moved from the Alcalatén comarca to the Alto Maestrazgo.
