History of Villamalur

Villamalur, in the Espadán mountains, is one of the smallest villages in the province. Its castle is of Muslim origin and was remodelled after the Christian conquest.

History

Around 1236 the area was part of the lordship of Zayd Abu Zayd, last Almohad governor of Valencia. The present name is first recorded in 1489 and in 1609 there were 21 Morisco houses. In the first half of the 17th century it was resettled by Aragonese. In 1715 it had 148 inhabitants and in 1900 it reached its peak of 546.

Heritage

The castle of Villamalur, possibly from between the 10th and 13th centuries, is of Muslim origin although most of the remains are Christian, from a rebuild after the conquest.
