History of Vilafamés

Vilafamés is one of the most recognisable villages of the inland Plana: reddish stone houses beneath a castle, a contemporary art museum and a rock-art shelter recognised by UNESCO.

Prehistory

In the Dalt del Tossal de la Font cave there are remains some 80,000 years old. The Abric del Castell, found on 14 August 1963, holds rock paintings presented in 1969 and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998. The Iberian settlement of Els Estrets-el Racó de Rata was occupied between the 3rd and 1st centuries BC.

Conquest and lordships

The settlement is attributed to Muslim times and the castle has foundations of Arab origin. In 1233, after the fall of Borriana, James I conquered the territory, and on 30 August 1241 he commissioned Guillem Ramón de Viella to settle the castle with a charter under the law of Zaragoza. In 1264 it passed to the Hospitallers and in 1317 to Montesa. In the 17th century the town bought its jurisdiction and joined the royal estate.

Early modern period and Carlist wars

The church of the Asunción was begun in 1594, with a doorway of 1601, and was remodelled and extended between 1778 and 1783. In March 1837 a first Carlist assault failed; on 29 October 1838 another was repelled and from 3 to 7 January 1839 it withstood Cabrera's siege, which ended with the arrival of royal troops.

Art and heritage

In 1971 the Vicente Aguilera Cerni Museum of Contemporary Art was founded in the Batlle palace. The historic-artistic ensemble has been a Site of Cultural Interest since 22 April 2005.
