Vallibona, in Els Ports, received its founding charter in 1271 from Blasco de Alagón and became independent of Morella in 1691. It went from over 1,800 inhabitants in 1900 to just over a hundred in 1994.
History
Vallibona borders Morella, which James I conquered around 1232. In 1271 Blasco de Alagón, its first feudal lord, granted it a founding charter. The parish church was built in the 14th century. In 1691 it became independent of Morella and in 1716 the Bishop of Tortosa ordered Mass to be said in Spanish, following the Nueva Planta Decrees.
20th century
It had 1,808 inhabitants in 1900 and 1,133 in 1950. After the 1959 stabilisation plan there was heavy emigration to industrial areas such as Barcelona and northern Castellón, and in 1994 104 inhabitants remained.
