Vallat, in the Alto Mijares, is today one of the smallest villages in Castellón. It was a barony of Arenós, lost its Moriscos in 1609 and had a brief boom with the hydroelectric plant.
History
Its origins are not known for certain, but there are Almohad-era data from the 13th century, suggesting a Muslim origin. In 1231 James I reconquered the village, which belonged to the lordship of Zayd Abu Zayd, and in 1242 it passed to the barony of Arenós. In 1465 it passed to the Duke of Villahermosa and the ruins of a palace survive. The expulsion of the Moriscos in 1609, who made up much of the population, brought severe decline, and in 1837 Mendizábal's disentailment left the municipality in private hands.
20th century
In the 1960s the population rose above 600 with the building of the hydroelectric plant, and in the 1980s it dropped to 14.
