Vall de Almonacid, in the Alto Palancia, was a farmstead of the castle of Almonecir and the head of a lordship that gave its name to a marquisate.
Middle Ages
Of Muslim origin, it was a farmstead of the castle of Almonecir called Aír. On 22 May 1238 James I gave the castle and its farmsteads to Berenguer de Palou, Bishop of Barcelona. In 1430 Alfonso V annexed the possessions of Fadrique, Count of Luna, after his treason in the war against Castile, and in 1437 the king sold the castle of Almonecir and the Vall to Vidal de Castellá.
Early modern period
In 1582 the first settlement charter was granted, to Matet and Pavías. In 1610 the Ximénez de Urrea family granted charters to Aír and Algimia, which were resettled with Aragonese families. In 1626 the marquisate of Almonacir was created, with Antonio Ximénez de Urrea as its first holder. In the 16th century the castle ceased to have a military function and the palace house was built. In the 19th century, with the abolition of lordships, Algimia, Matet and Pavías separated from the Vall and became independent municipalities.
