History of Useres

Les Useres is a mountain village in the Alcalatén, once belonging to the Urrea family and the Counts of Aranda. A battle of the First Carlist War was fought here in 1839.

Conquest and lordships

On 24 July 1233 James I granted the Alcalatén lands to Ximeno II de Urrea; according to some authors the occupation was in 1235. No founding charter is known. The place belonged to the Urrea family, then to the Counts of Aranda and the ducal house of Híjar, until in 1818 the Alcalatén passed to the Crown.

17th to 20th centuries

On 9 November 1613 the first stone of the parish church was laid and in 1622 the hermitage of San Antonio was built. On 18 July 1839 the Battle of Useras was fought, in which O'Donnell defeated Cabrera's troops. In 1959 the village moved to the diocese of Segorbe-Castellón.
