History of la Torre d'en Doménec

La Torre d'en Doménec, in the Plana Alta, grew around a medieval tower that no longer exists. It became a parish in 1828 and until 1989 was part of the historic Maestrazgo.

Origins

The earliest traces are an Iberian settlement predating the 5th century BC at Lloma Forner and els Racons. The village is medieval and probably arose with the military orders' rule over Coves castle: Fray Lope Martínez, Calatrava commander of Alcañiz, granted a charter to Vilanova d'Alcolea and kept properties, including a tower around which the village grew. The source says the charter is unknown, but also that it appears in 1300.

Montesa and the parish

It belonged to the district of Cuevas de Vinromá and, from 1319, to the Order of Montesa. It depended on the parish of Vilanova d'Alcolea until the 19th century; it became a parish on 19 March 1828 and the church of Santa Quiteria was begun in 1865. It was part of the historic Maestrazgo until 1989, when it moved to the Plana Alta comarca.
