Toga, in the Alto Mijares, grew from a Muslim farmstead. It became an independent parish in 1535 and peaked at about 500 inhabitants in 1794.
History
Little reliable information survives about its origins; some studies credit the Goths with founding it, without proof. A Muslim farmstead existed on the site in Islamic times. In 1247 it belonged to Zayd Abu Zayd, the last Almohad governor of Valencia, who after converting to Christianity gave it to the Archbishop of Tarragona. In 1535 it separated from Villahermosa del Río as an independent parish; the parish church was finished in 1658.
Population
Between 1609 and 1646 the number of houses fell from 170 to 50. In 1707 a plague devastated the population. In 1794 it reached about 500 inhabitants and has declined steadily since.
