History of Todolella

Todolella, in Els Ports, was a hamlet of Morella and became independent in 1691, after centuries of conflict. Its founding charter dates from 1242.

History

It seems to be of Muslim origin. After the conquest by James I's troops, the king granted the founding charter to Ramón de Caldera, dated in Valencia on 2 August 1242. In the late 13th or early 14th century Francisco de Vinatea received the lordship by marrying «Na» Carbona, daughter of the lord of Todolella. In 1691 Charles II granted independence from Morella. In 1710, in the War of the Spanish Succession, a battle took place at the bridge over the Cantavieja river between men of Morella and miquelets. In 1842 it appears in the census as «Todolella y Sarañana».
