Tírig, in the Alt Maestrat, received a founding charter in 1245 and passed through the Templars and Montesa. It had 1,215 inhabitants in 1950 and 419 in 2019.
Lordship and founding charter
It was part of the bailiwick of Cuevas de Vinromá. Blasco de Alagón was the lord and in 1237 he gave the lordship to Joan de Brusca, who on 15 September 1245 granted a charter to several Christian families, with rather high rents. The lordship passed to Artal de Alagón, then the Templars and, from 1319, the Order of Montesa. In 1324 it was governed by the fueros of Valencia and in 1361 the crop-sharing was cancelled because of depopulation.
Population
It had about 100 inhabitants in 1646, about 225 in 1794 and 1,215 in 1950; since then it has fallen sharply to 419 in 2019.
