la Serratella belonged to the lords of Cuevas de Vinromá, then to the Templars (1294) and to the Order of Montesa until the 19th century. Since 2023 it has been part of the Alt Maestrat comarca.
Lords and military orders
The area was known as the sierra de Bierach and belonged to the general territory of the castle of Cuevas de Vinromá, whose first feudal lord was Blasco de Alagón. It later passed to the Order of Calatrava and then to Artal de Alagón (the source gives no dates).
In 1294 it became part of the Templar commandery. When the papacy dissolved the order and the Order of Montesa was created, Montesa inherited its property and la Serratella remained in its lordship until the 19th century.
Change of comarca
Until 2023 the municipality belonged to the Plana Alta comarca. It then moved to the Alt Maestrat for social, economic and political reasons, under Law 8/2022 of 29 December of the Generalitat.
