History of Santa Magdalena de Pulpis

Santa Magdalena de Pulpis, in the Baix Maestrat, was a small Templar and Montesa community that split from Alcalà de Xivert in 1857.

From the Templars to independence

In January 1190 Alfonso II gave the village to the Templars, though it was still in Muslim hands, and in 1233 the Templar Master conquered it. The source gives two dates for the settlement charter: February 1287, under the law of Valencia, and 1286, according to Madoz, by the general chapter of Montesa. In 1329 it had 30 houses. In 1819 it obtained its own baptismal font, parish and cemetery and in 1857 it appears as an independent municipality, split from Alcalá de Chivert.

Population

In 1845 it reached 160 houses or households, in the last third of the 19th century it had 1,111 inhabitants and in 1900 it exceeded 1,400.
