San Rafael del Río, in the Baix Maestrat, is a very young municipality: until the mid-19th century it was a farmstead and it did not become independent of Traiguera until 1927.
History
In 1234 James I founded Traiguera, of which San Rafael was part, and the following year he gave it to the Hospitallers. In the mid-19th century San Rafael was still a simple farmstead; from then on oil production grew until twenty mills were working. On 28 November 1927 it became a municipality independent of Traiguera.
