La Salzadella, in the Alt Maestrat, was a lordship of Blasco de Alagón, Calatrava and the Templars before passing to Montesa. In 1924 an important Iron Age necropolis was found there.
Lordships
From 1235 to 1245 it was the lordship of Blasco de Alagón, and in 1238 the founding charter was granted to Miquel d'Ascó and Pere d'Olzina. It passed to the Order of Calatrava until 1275 and from 1275 to 1293 belonged to Artal de Alagón. In 1294 the Crown gave it to the Templars and in 1319, after the Templars' dissolution, it passed to Montesa, which held it until the 19th century.
Early modern period and 20th century
In 1646 it had about 500 inhabitants and in 1794 about a thousand. Between 1736 and 1756 the church of the Purificación de María was built. In 1849 Madoz gives 911 inhabitants and in 1900 the village had 1,617. In 1924 an important Iron Age set was found in the Els Espleters necropolis. In 1936 the church was gutted inside and in 1964 and 1967 it was restored, with donations from villagers who had emigrated to Mexico.
