Rossell, in the Baix Maestrat, belonged to Montesa until the 19th century and was always the smallest town of its district. In 1648 it was burned during the Reapers' War.
History
There are Neolithic remains in the Cova de les Bruixes and Iberian sites such as El Polseguer and the Collado del Moro. In 1317 the alcaldía of Cervera was granted to the Order of Montesa and Rossell stayed under its lordship until the 19th century. In 1648, during the Reapers' War, Marshal Schomberg, who held Tortosa, raided Rossell and burned it completely. In the 19th century bandit gangs and Carlist forces operated in the area.
20th century
The village lived through the Civil War and the frost of 1956; in the 1960s many residents emigrated. In 1972 the municipality of Bel was annexed to Rossell.
