History of Matet

Matet, in the Alto Palancia, is of Muslim origin and was tied to the lordship of Segorbe until 1430. Its founding charter dates from 1582.

Middle Ages

The village was probably founded in the late 12th or early 13th century; its street plan points to a Muslim origin. In 1238 James I conquered it from Zayd Abu Zayd and on 22 May of that year gave it to Berenguer de Palou, Bishop of Barcelona. In 1280 it belonged to Pedro Cornell. It then formed part of the lordship of Segorbe until 1430, when Alfonso V separated it by annexing the possessions of the Count of Luna.

Early modern period

On 18 April 1582 the founding charter of Matet was granted in Vall de Almonacid to Juan Ximénez de Urrea and Juana de Enríquez, Counts of Aranda.
