La Mata de Morella, in Els Ports, was resettled in 1234 and enjoyed its greatest prosperity as a livestock centre. It became independent of Morella in 1691.
History
In 1234 Blasco de Alagón recovered the place and gave it to Bernat Montçó to resettle; it then became part of the general district of Morella. It enjoyed its greatest prosperity as an important livestock centre, though the general crisis of the Maestrazgo hit it especially hard. In 1691 King Charles II granted it, with other hamlets, municipal independence from Morella. Until the 1916 renaming reform it was simply called La Mata.
