History of Higueras

Higueras, in the Alto Palancia, was conquered by James I in 1236, became a fief of the bishopric of Segorbe in 1368 and received its charter of settlement in 1611, after the expulsion of the Moriscos.

From the Iberians to the Muslim period

Iberian settlements are known in the area, and there are written references to tribes that may have settled here in Roman times. The population later moved. In the Muslim period the first reference uses the name "Torre de la Higuera". The source gives no dates for these periods.

Christian conquest and the bishop's lordship

On 22 April 1236 James I conquered the village, like much of the comarca, when the Muslim king Zayd Abu Zayd surrendered. He converted to Christianity, took the name Vicente and gave forts, towns and farmsteads to the Bishop of Segorbe, Guillermo Eximeno or Gimeno.

In 1248 the Muslims of the Espadán range rose up under Al Azrag, and Higueras gave him strong support because it lay somewhat away from the main routes. In 1368 the Bishop of Segorbe, Juan de Barcelona, exchanged Higueras for Navajas with María Sánchez de Lumberri, lady of Higueras, and from then on it was a fief of the bishopric. The population was still mostly Muslim.

The Moriscos and the charter

After the expulsion of the Moriscos in 1609, the village came under the barony of Ayódar, together with Villamalur, Fuentes de Ayódar and Torralba del Pinar. In 1611 the Baron of Ayódar, Miguel Jofre, granted the charter of settlement.

After the Mendizábal confiscations, and under pressure from other lordships, Higueras lost much of its land and the municipal area ended up almost as it is today. In the 19th century there were disputes with neighbouring Pavías and the lords of both villages changed the boundaries. The source does not give the years.
