History of Herbés

Herbers (Herbés) was a hamlet of Morella from its founding charter of 1233 and became an independent town in 1691. It keeps a 14th-century Gothic castle.

Charter and independence

In 1233 Blasco de Alagón granted the founding charter to the place. In 1691 Charles II granted municipal autonomy as a town independent of Morella. In 1926 it merged with Morella again and in the 1970s it recovered its independence.

Heritage and the Carlist wars

The hermitage of the Virgen del Sargar dates from the 13th century and the Gothic castle of Herbés from the 14th. In the 19th century the area was under Carlist control for quite some time.
