History of Fuente la Reina

Fuente la Reina, in the Alto Mijares, is of Arab origin and kept a Morisco population until the expulsion of 1609.

History

It is of Arab origin. It was probably resettled by Aragonese but kept a Morisco population until their expulsion in 1609. The first historical data are from the 13th century; according to the source, during James I's conquest the royal counsellor Guillén de Bellpuig negotiated the peaceful surrender of several districts, including the Alto Mijares, and received the baronies of Montán, Montanejos, Fuente la Reina and Arañuel. An unsourced oral tradition about the origin of the name links it to a spring of medicinal waters near the Maimona river.

Population

It reached 462 inhabitants in 1900 and has declined gradually since, with a slight change of trend since 2000.
