History of Forcall

Forcall, in Els Ports, began as a hamlet of Morella and won its autonomy in 1691. It keeps its Plaza Mayor and a founding charter of 1246.

Antiquity

La Moleta dels Frares, discovered in 1876, was found within the municipality; it shows occupation from the Iron Age to late Roman times and is identified with the Roman city of Lesera.

Middle Ages

The founding charter is dated 2 May 1246, granted by Prince Peter of Portugal in the name of James I. Forcall was one of Morella's hamlets and was under the lordship of Blasco de Alagón. On 2 February 1463 Miguel Balaguer led the villagers in a revolt against John II in favour of the Catalans.

Early modern period and 19th-20th centuries

In 1691 it gained municipal autonomy under Charles II. The Plaza Mayor dates from the 16th century. In the 19th century it was Carlist territory and the present church replaced a 13th-century Gothic one.
