Figueroles began as part of Lucena del Cid. Its church became a parish in 1602 and the village won municipal independence in 1726.
Origins
On 24 July 1233 James I granted jurisdictional rule to Ximén de Urrea. In the mid-14th century the villagers obtained permission for a hermitage dedicated to San Mateo, and on 8 May 1383 Cardinal Pedro de Luna issued an arbitration ruling on tithes.
Independence
In 1602 the church was constituted a parish and in 1603 it split from Lucena del Cid's. On 1 August 1726 municipal independence was obtained. In 1798 the lordship passed to the ducal house of Híjar and in 1818 ceased to belong to it.
Heritage
The church of San Mateo was built between 1640 and 1651 and remodelled between 1993 and 2003. The Casa de los Colegiales was built in 1608, with a chapel with frescoes from 1726.
