Espadilla, in the Alto Mijares, is of Arab origin. After the Christian conquest it belonged to the barony of Arenoso and, from 1471, to the duchy of Villahermosa.
Origin and the barony of Arenoso
The municipality is of Arab origin. According to the source, Zayd Abu Zayd, by then converted to Christianity, donated it to the Archbishop of Tarragona (no date given). In 1242 it passed to the barony of Arenoso, granted to Eximén Pérez de Tarazona, and in 1355 to the ducal house of Gandía, when its first duke, Alfonso of Aragon the Elder, married into it.
The duchy of Villahermosa and the Moriscos
In 1464 the lordship was confiscated from Alfonso's grandson Jaime for rebelling against John II of Aragon, and in 1471 the king gave it to his son Alfonso, for whom the title of Duke of Villahermosa was created. In 1609 Espadilla was a Morisco village with 85 houses and belonged to the hijuela of la Vall d'Uixó.
