Cervera del Maestre, in the Baix Maestrat, was a Hospitaller commandery and later of the Order of Montesa, tied to the Grand Master's table until the 19th century.
Origins and conquest
The source records a tradition crediting its foundation to the Phocaean Greeks in 331 BC. Cervera castle was built in the 11th century. Ramon Berenguer IV gave the land to the Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem; in November 1233 the Hospitallers agreed a settlement charter with the Muslims, in 1235 James I confirmed the donation and a charter was granted for the Christians of the district, and in 1250 the Order granted a new charter for the town alone.
Montesa
In 1317 it passed to the Order of Montesa. In the 14th century its revenues were assigned to the Mesa Maestral and it was tied to the Grand Master until the 19th century. The Maestranza de Montesa castle dates from the 13th century and the oil mill from the 17th.
