Castellnovo, in the Alto Palancia, has a castle of Roman origin, remodelled in Muslim times and in the 15th century. The 1609 resettlement was carried out by Beatriz de Borja with Aragonese, Navarrese and Catalan settlers.
Middle Ages
James I conquered the village in 1228, together with Segorbe. In 1233 the castle passed to Berenguer d'Entença, who held it until 1291. In the 15th century the village belonged to the House of Arenoso and around the middle of that century the castle underwent Renaissance alterations.
Early modern period
In 1609, after the expulsion of the Moriscos, Beatriz de Borja-Llançol resettled the village with Aragonese, Navarrese and Catalans. In 1668 Charles II granted the title of first Marquis to Antonio Folch de Cardona y Borja.
19th century
In 1836 a battle between liberals and Carlists took place in the village, and in 1837 seigniorial rights were abolished, leaving the marquisate as an honorary title.
