Castell de Cabres is the least populated municipality in the Valencian Community. Blasco de Alagón settled it in 1239 and it has been through centuries of depopulation.
Resettlement and depopulation
In 1237 Blasco de Alagón founded the places of La Mola Escaboça and Vilanova within its area, which were soon abandoned. On 6 January 1239 he settled the village after the Christian conquest. In 1463 it was depopulated because of the war in Catalonia. In 1523 it had about 175 inhabitants and in 1900, 416.
Today
The parish church is dedicated to San Lorenzo, whose feast is held on the first Sunday of September. In 2011 it had 17 inhabitants.
