Canet lo Roig, in the Baix Maestrat, grew around a Hospitaller fortress-church, built in 1288, and was an independent town from 1540.
Antiquity and the Middle Ages
A hill preserves the remains of a settlement from the Bronze Age and early Iron Age, which ended in the late 3rd century BC. The Arabs arrived in the 7th century. In 1288 the Hospitallers founded the fortress-church, with licence from the commander of Cervera. In the early 14th century the lordship of the Order of Montesa began, lasting until the 19th century.
Early modern period
In 1540 Francisco Llansol de Romaní made the village an independent town. The epithet «lo Roig» first appears in 1611. In 1795 Cavanilles writes «Canet el Roxo». Around 1523 it had about 650 inhabitants and in 1900 about 2,500.
