History of Càlig

Càlig, in the Baix Maestrat, was a lordship of the Orders of the Hospital and Montesa and became an independent town in 1540. Its Socorro sanctuary is the centre of its devotion.

Resettlement and lordships

On 12 July 1234 the Hospitaller grand master made a first Christian resettlement of the area with Alí, a hamlet that never took hold. Between 1234 and 1319 it was a lordship of the Hospital and from 1319 of Montesa, until the 19th century. On 11 January 1540 it became an independent town.

Early modern period

In 1649 it was sacked during the Reapers' War. The parish church, from the 14th century, was rebuilt and extended between 1622 and 1659. The first document on the Socorro dedication dates from 1582, and the new sanctuary was built in the last third of the 18th century.

20th century

In the 1980s underground water was found and crops changed. The 1936-39 war left the interior of the parish church empty.
