History of Cabanes

Cabanes, in the Plana Alta, lies beside the Via Augusta and keeps a Roman arch. It belonged to the bishopric of Tortosa until the late 19th century.

Antiquity

The area has prehistoric sites and Iberian finds; in 1913 a famous Iberian stele was found at El Polido. It is believed, without confirmation, that the place began as a Via Augusta way-station called Ildum. The Roman arch, probably 2nd century, is part of that legacy.

Middle Ages and early modern period

Miravet castle was taken by El Cid in 1091, but the conquest did not hold. In 1224 and 1225 James I confirmed and extended the gifts of castles (Miravet, Sufera, Fadrell) to Bishop Ponç de Torrella. The present town was founded in 1243, within the district of Miravet. On 5 July 1575 Albalat and Miravet were annexed to Cabanes. It remained under the bishopric of Tortosa until the late 19th century; Albalat and Miravet are in ruins today.
