History of Borriol

Borriol sits at the gates of Castelló, on the mountain slope. It has rock paintings at El Albaroc, a Roman Via Augusta and a castle of Arab origin.

Antiquity

There are rock paintings at El Albaroc and archaeological remains from several periods. A 3rd-century milestone, from the time of Emperor Decius, proves the route of the Via Augusta.

Middle Ages

The castle is of Arab origin on Roman foundations. The population was mostly Muslim until 1609. James I granted the founding charter in 1250 and the old Casa de la Vila, now a museum, dates from the 14th century. In 1410 Saint Vincent Ferrer preached on a stone still kept in the hermitage.

Early modern period

In 1609 the Moriscos were expelled: according to the Caracena census there were 114 houses, 49 of Old Christians and 65 of New Christians. In 1684 work began on the Calvario hermitage.
