Atzeneta del Maestrat was a Templar town and part of the Setena de Culla. It keeps medieval walls, a prison tower and a town hall that was once a hospital and the commander's palace.
The Templars and Anglesola
On 5 November 1210 Peter II of Aragon promised the Templars Culla castle. On 11 May 1235 Blasco de Alagón gave the village and named his daughter Constanza, married to Guillermo de Anglesola, as heir. The settlement charter was granted on 11 January 1272 and on 27 March 1303 the sale of Culla's villages and castles to the Templars was signed.
Heritage
The medieval walls date from the 13th century to the late 18th. The parish church is Renaissance, 17th century, with a Baroque altarpiece of 1744, and the Presó tower served as a prison from 1853 until the 1960s. The town hall, from the 16th century, was a hospital and the palace of the commander of the Setena de Culla.
