History of Ares del Maestrat

Ares del Maestrat, at more than a thousand metres above sea level, was the head of a Templar commandery and lies close to the rock paintings of the Gasulla ravine.

Conquest and the Templars

In 1170 Alfonso II of Aragon conquered the village and in 1232 James I reconquered it for good. In 1234 it passed to the Templars as the head of one of their commanderies; the first founding charter is from Peter II of Aragon.

Early modern period

In 1707, in the War of the Spanish Succession, Philip V's troops burned and destroyed the earlier church. The façade of the parish church is 18th-century Baroque and the bell tower is from the 13th.

Heritage

The old market hall was built on 10th-century Arab walls. In 1917 the rock paintings of the Gasulla ravine were discovered.
