les Alqueries, in the Plana Baixa, grew out of the union of three hamlets, Bellaguarda, Bonastre and Bonretorn, and became independent of Vila-real in 1985.
Three hamlets
The area has been inhabited since Iberian times. The town was formerly divided into three hamlets, Bellaguarda, Bonastre and Bonretorn, whose inhabitants were mostly Andalusi Muslims. After the Christian conquest in the 13th century it became part of the municipality of Vila-real (the source gives no date).
Expulsion and resettlement
After April 1609, the date of the expulsion of the Moriscos, a Christian population took over their properties. Many were farmers from Artana, Betxí, Nules and Vila-real, plus settlers from the Maestrat. Seventy-two years after the expulsion, monks from Caudiel built the church of el Replà, which became a meeting point and led to the three hamlets being united under the name les Alqueries.
Independence
In 1985 les Alqueries became independent of Vila-real by decree of the Generalitat Valenciana.
