History of Almenara

Almenara rises beside a castle that once dominated the Plana Baixa plain. It was the residence of James I and Queen Yolanda, the setting of a Germanías battle and part of a barony with its own name.

Before the town

There are remains from the Epipalaeolithic, dolmens and a possible menhir from the Eneolithic, a Bronze Age settlement on the Montaña Blanca and an Iberian settlement and necropolis next to the castle. Roman remains are linked to Sagunto.

Castle and conquest

The castle was built in Andalusi times. In 1236 the Muslims gave the district of Segorbe, which included Almenara, to the Bishop of Albarracín, and in 1238 James I took the stronghold.

Middle Ages and early modern period

In 1292 it passed to Joan de Próxita, lord of the barony of Llutxent, for 220,000 sueldos. In 1521 the Battle of Almenara took place, in which the Duke of Segorbe's royalist troops defeated the Germanías rebels.

19th and 20th centuries

In 1839 the Dominican convent was destroyed to repair the fortification. The walls have been a Site of Cultural Interest since 1985. The population doubled in the 1950s.
