Albocàsser, in the Alt Maestrat, received its founding charter in 1239 and passed through the hands of Calatrava, Artal de Alagón and the Templars. Its hermitage of San Pablo is a sanctuary with centuries of pilgrimage.
Charter and military orders
On 25 January 1239 Blasco de Alagón, lieutenant of James I, granted the charter to Juan de Brusca and thirty other settlers, under Aragonese law. On 24 January 1243 the Order of Calatrava, lord of the place, confirmed it. On 2 June 1275 Calatrava exchanged the district with Artal de Alagón, who in 1293 handed it to James II, who then ceded it to the Templars.
Heritage
The hermitage of Los Santos Juanes dates from the late 13th century. The hermitage and hostel of San Pablo was begun in the late 16th century, with a church begun in 1617. The parish church was begun in the late 17th century on a 13th-century Gothic temple.
